"Ooooo ... that feels good"Llamas are amazingly versatile when it comes to finding a way to scratch that spot that itches. Their feet consist of two toes, each toe is a soft pad with toenail ... perfect for scratching behind the ears. The toenails need trimming three or four times a year. This little guy is only a few weeks old, but he already has the technique down pat. |

At right, Call demonstrates another scratching technique: using the teeth. A
llama has front teeth only on
the bottom, with a hard palate on top. They pinch the grass between those front
teeth and the top palate to tear the grass when they graze. There are grinding
molars way at the back of the mouth. A mature male develops fighting teeth
that should be kept cut short.
